She is a beautiful 5 year old who was diagnosed with a rare condition in February 2022 called a UREA CYCLE DISORDER specifically: ORNITHINE TRANSCARBAMYLASE or OTC.
ORNITHINE TRANSCARBAMYLASE
OTC - her body is missing a component that helps break down protein which as a result causes ammonia, a highly toxic substance to build up in her bloodstream. This can cause brain damage, coma, liver failure and could be fatal if not monitored properly. Beyond protein intake there are MANY other factors that can cause stress to her disorder leading to the same result. The purpose of getting Karsyn a medical service dog is to have the dog detect when her ammonia levels are rising before they get to a critical level. The only way currently to check ammonia levels are to do a very sensitive blood draw in a hospital with trained professionals.
